Who Should Teach English

I’m reading Seargeant’s Exploring World Englishes: Language in a Global Context, and I ran across the following quote that I think speaks to the need to tear down the fallacy that native speaker teachers are some special creature just by being a native speaker.

…Teachers themselves—in that they each speak particular forms of English—are an embodiment of the diversity of the language…

The above is a powerful statement about the value of hiring both native and non-native speaking teachers, as well as teachers that speak non-prestige varieties.
