About Me

I’m Dr. Joshua M. Paiz, a globe-trotting educator that splits my time between Shanghai, New York, and Washington, D.C. My background is in applied linguistics (ALx) and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). However, before entering the academy, I worked in IT and retail/entertainment management—which has given me a rather pragmatic view of my discipline and of higher education. My published work has appeared in places like TESOL Journal, the Journal of Language and Sexuality, the Asian EFL Journal, the Journal of Second Language Writing, and TESOL’s Second Language Writing News. I also co-edited L2 Writing in the Global Context: Represented, Underrepresented, and Unrepresented Voices (全球视野下的二语写作研究:已知与待知) through Foreign Language Research and Teaching Press with Drs. Tony Silva, Junju Wang, and Cong (Annie) Zhang. I also hold a level three (intermediate) Chinese language proficiency certification and a TESOL leadership and management certification. I also hold a leadership and management certificate from TESOL International and have recently passed Praxis I and II (ESOL) with above average scores.

When I’m not at work, I’m in D.C. with my husband and my dog. I enjoy cooking, reading, and studying Chinese. 我中文名字是庞书华. My spouse and I like to travel, and enjoy watching each other playing video games—usually with one of us telling the other what to do.  If you have any questions or comments feel free to get in touch using the contact form.
